Education Programmes
The Golden Hinde has been a unique and very popular educational resource since it arrived in Southwark in 1996. We already work extensively with London schools and with Centres of Excellence such as the Institute of Education, Museum of London and Treehouse. We assist many schools to deliver the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2, in which Drake and the Age of Exploration are core topics. Our programmes are based on ‘Living History’ experiences using costumed educators to lead and facilitate sessions with class groups on board the ship. Below is a list of the programmes we currently offer;
Guided Tours
Let our costumed educators bring the Golden Hinde and its history to life. Learn about life at sea for both the officers and ordinary sailors, hear tales of Drakes' voyages around the world and learn about the weapons and warfare in the 16th Century.

Maritime Workshop
Become an officer on board and learn how to navigate the Golden Hinde. This hands-on workshop will teach pupils how to measure time and speed on board and how to find the way through the vastness of the ocean. Pupils will handle navigationals instruments and be able to trace Francis Drakes' voyage around the world. The workshop will end with a gun drill.

Day Living History
Join our crew for a day! An exciting day-long living history experience in which pupils and staff dress in Tudor sailors’ costume and experience life aboard a Tudor warship. Workshops on navigation, barber surgery, and gun drill, led by costumed interpreters. Pupils participate in a mock battle, move the yardarm, and turn the capstan. Snack of dry biscuits and grog (Hobnobs and apple juice) is provided as a typical snack consumed at the time

Overnight Living History
Sleepover on the Golden Hinde! An unforgettable Living History Experience. After an afternoon and evening of activities aboard ship (see above), pupils and staff have the opportunity to sleep on the gundeck amongst the cannon. A tasty dinner (vegetable stew and bread) is served. In the morning a Tudor breakfast of bread and cheese is provided, followed by a treat and hot chocolate as you return to the 21st Century!
During your overnight stay, you will be supported by members of our staff and a security guard.

Journey Through Time (Combined Tour with Shakespare's Globe Theatre)
This unique double tour is designed to give an indepth insight into the Tudor times with access to the Shakespeare’s Globe Exhibition, a private guided tour of the Globe Theatre & Rose Theatre archaeological site Visit time 2½ hrs. Then a short walk down the Thames Path to have a private Guided Tour of The Golden Hinde, learning about life on board the ship, and Sir Francis Drake. Visit time 1hr.
The joint visit lasts approximately 4½ hrs including a 1hr lunch break. Lunch space is available at The Golden Hinde in our Tudor Den for schools (according to availability and group size of 25 people max)
