SIR FRANCIS DRAKE'S FAMOUS GALLEON

Maintenance Works

Firstly, a big thank you to our supporters, volunteers, and donors for all your assistance in making this maintenance project possible. Below is an overview of the works that have been carried out so far

Week 1
The first week we were craneless, so had to move things by hand and took the yards down into the dock, with the exception of the rather heavy main-yard. Much scraping of the yards and bowsprit (which remained in place) then ensued to get them ready for a new coat of varnish.

Week 2
Once the crane arrived on Tuesday morning, we set to work bringing down the main and mizzen masts, as well as the main yard. Once our riggers and shipwright had inspected everything and prepared the masts for lifting, it was all hands on deck to start bringing them down into the dock. We managed to take everything down in record time and set to work removing the shrouds and fighting-tops. With the big job of scraping the masts we enlisted the help of the Involve volunteer scheme, who provided us with teams from Deutche Bank and Swiss Re who really worked up a sweat!

Week 3
We completed the rebuilding of the new fighting-tops, revarnished the main/ top masts and yards and rebuilt shrouds. The crane then came in to reinstall it all, with our riggers making sure everything was back in place.

Week 4
The second fighting top is currently being rebuilt by the shipwrights and more scraping and varnishing for the mizzen and foremasts by Deutche Bank. These will hopefully be completed w/c 29th March.
